Department of Pharmacology
Unlocking the power of medicine, where science reveals how drugs heal, treat, and transform lives

Pharmacology is a unique biomedical discipline that studies the origins, uses, and mechanisms of action, adverse effects of drugs. Our department emphasizes the importance of understanding these processes to ensure safe and effective drug prescribing. Our curriculum spans pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacometrics, pharmacogenetics, pharmacogenomics, systems pharmacology, disease-specific therapeutics, drug discovery and development, personalised medicine, AI in pharmacology, clinical trials, green pharmaceuticals, adverse drug reactions, and toxicology. Our staff are highly qualified, many with advanced training in medical and health professions education. We innovate in teaching methodologies, digitalization of education, and educational research Hands-On Practical Training and Advanced Teaching Techniques
To complement theoretical learning, the department offers extensive hands-on practical training that allows students to apply pharmacological concepts in real-world clinical settings. We provide access to high-fidelity manikins for simulation-based training, enabling students to practice drug administration, monitoring, and emergency care in a controlled environment. These simulations prepare students to handle complex clinical scenarios with confidence.
Furthermore, computer-assisted learning (CAL) is incorporated into the teaching methodology, allowing students to interact with digital tools that simulate drug actions, effects, and interactions in the human body. These modern teaching aids enhance the learning experience, making complex pharmacological concepts more understandable and engaging.
Clinical Education FocusStudents are taught the principles of drug prescribing, including drug selection, dosage, routes of administration, and monitoring for side effects. Emphasis is placed on understanding the rationale behind prescribing decisions to avoid unnecessary drug usage and promote patient safety. Our Department is committed to excellence in teaching and educational research, while working closely with Translational Research Programs to support impactful research in therapeutic drug innovations and patient care.
The department collaborates with clinical departments to ensure that students experience the application of pharmacological principles in real-world medical settings. This integrated approach prepares our students to provide holistic clinical services by ensuring they can evaluate the pharmacological aspects of treatment plans alongside other clinical decisions. Envision to be an acclaimed department for excellence in Medical Education,Scientific Research, Medical Ethics.
Research and Innovation in PharmacologyThe department boasts state-of-the-art Experimental and Research laboratories, providing an excellent platform for research-oriented students and faculty. Students are encouraged to participate in research projects that explore new drug formulations, therapeutic approaches, and the development of innovative drug therapies. This provides them with a solid foundation in research methodologies and an understanding of the evolving field of pharmacology.
Our faculty members, who are actively engaged in research, guide students in exploring various areas such as drug safety, clinical trials, and drug interactions. This research-driven approach fosters a deep understanding of drug development and its clinical applications, preparing students to contribute to advancements in medical science.
Commitment to Good Clinical Practice (GCP)The Department of Pharmacology at SMCRI also places great importance on educating students about Good Clinical Practice (GCP), which is essential for the ethical and safe use of pharmaceuticals. We ensure that Indian medical graduates are not only knowledgeable in pharmacology but also understand the ethical principles and regulations involved in prescribing drugs. This includes educating them on issues such as patient consent, adverse drug reactions, and reporting protocols and disseminating awareness about patient safety and health economics among budding healthcare professionals
By instilling these principles, we ensure to create new genre of graduates and postgraduates who are competent, accomplished and also have compassion for incessant learning.
