Department of Pathology
Exploring the human body, one layer at a time - where knowledge meets hands-on discovery

The Department of Pathology at SMCRI goes beyond just teaching students about diseases; it provides a holistic view of how diseases are diagnosed, how they develop, and how they can be managed. The study of pathology encompasses a wide array of disciplines, including diagnostic pathology, genetic pathology, therapeutic pathology, and disease prevention. By studying how diseases affect the body at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels, students learn how to identify abnormalities, interpret clinical findings, and contribute to the effective treatment of patients.
State-of-the-Art Facilities and Infrastructure:
The department of pathology is one of the largest and best-equipped in the medical college, providing students and faculty with access to state-of-the-art facilities. The Central Laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge technology for a wide range of diagnostic tests, ensuring accuracy and precision in patient diagnosis. The department also includes specialized service laboratories in critical areas such as:
- Haematology: The study of blood and blood-forming tissues, including the diagnosis of bone marrow, blood disorders like anaemia, leukaemia, clotting abnormalities and other blood abnormalities.
- Cytology: A laboratory focused on examining cells to diagnose diseases like cancers, infections, and inflammatory conditions using minimally / non invasive techniques.
- Clinical Pathology: The study of body fluids, including urine and stool samples, to diagnose metabolic disorders, infections, and organ dysfunctions.
- Histopathology: The microscopic examination of tissue samples received post – operatively and intra-operatively to diagnose a variety of conditions, including cancers, infections, inflammations, degenerative disorders etc.
- Forensic Pathology, Molecular pathology, immunohistochemistry are some other branches where the department plays a significant role.
Blood Bank and Advanced Techniques:
The Blood Bank is another integral part of the Department of Pathology at SMCRI, supporting both the academic and clinical needs of the institution. The Blood Bank is fully equipped to handle component separation, which ensures that patients receive specific components of blood (such as red blood cells, plasma, platelets, etc.) based on their individual needs. In addition, the department offers apheresis services, which allow for the collection of specific blood components from a donor, such as platelets, specifically to treat patients with platelet disorders.
This aspect of the department is particularly vital in ensuring a reliable and safe supply of blood products for patients undergoing surgery, treatment for blood disorders, and other critical conditions.
Expert Faculty and Research Excellence:The Department of Pathology is led by a team of highly qualified faculty members, many of whom are recognized for their expertise and contributions to the field of pathology. The faculty is committed to providing students with the best possible education, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to ensure that students gain a deep understanding of the mechanisms of disease.
In addition to teaching, our faculty members are involved in cutting-edge research, advancing knowledge in areas such as molecular pathology, disease biomarkers, and diagnostic techniques. The department actively encourages students to participate in research activities, offering them the opportunity to engage in projects that contribute to the improvement of diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Clinical Application:The Department of Pathology plays a central role in ensuring that students understand the clinical applications of pathology. Through close collaboration with other clinical departments, pathology helps to provide integrated care by facilitating accurate diagnoses and guiding treatment strategies. Our curriculum emphasizes the translation of pathological findings into clinical practice, ensuring that students are not only knowledgeable but also skilled in applying this knowledge to real-world medical situation.
