The Emergency Department (ED) at Siddaganga Medical College & Research Institute (SMCRI) Hospital is a critical, fast-paced, and essential part of the hospital’s healthcare services. Our department is dedicated to providing timely, comprehensive, and life-saving medical care to patients in urgent and emergency situations, ensuring that they receive immediate attention for various medical emergencies.
The SMCRI Emergency Department is designed to handle a wide range of emergencies, from minor injuries and illnesses to life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, trauma, and respiratory distress. Equipped with the latest technology, staffed by trained emergency medicine specialists, and supported by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, we ensure that every patient receives the highest standard of emergency care.

The Emergency Department at SMCRI plays a central role in the training of undergraduate medical students, as well as residents in emergency medicine. We provide hands-on clinical experience in emergency care, triage, and patient management. In addition:
The Emergency Department at SMCRI Hospital offers a broad range of services designed to stabilize, treat, and manage patients in critical and urgent medical situations. Our services include, but are not limited to:
Trauma and Accident Care
- Major Trauma: Immediate evaluation and stabilization of patients with major trauma from accidents, falls, or other severe injuries. This includes advanced trauma life support (ATLS), hemodynamic monitoring, and fast-track decision-making to determine the need for surgery or other interventions.
- Minor Injuries: Treatment for minor injuries such as cuts, sprains, fractures, burns, and soft tissue injuries. This includes wound cleaning, suturing, casting, and pain management.
- Orthopedic Emergencies: Management of fractures, dislocations, and musculoskeletal injuries, in collaboration with the Orthopedic Department for surgical intervention if necessary.
- Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack): Immediate assessment and stabilization of patients presenting with chest pain, including rapid ECG, troponin testing, and thrombolytic therapy or immediate catheterization in cases of STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction).
- Cardiac Arrest: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) protocols for the management of patients in cardiac arrest, including defibrillation, resuscitation, and critical care support.
- Arrhythmias: Diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation, atrial fibrillation, and other rhythm abnormalities, using medications, electrical cardioversion, or pacemaker/defibrillator interventions.
- Stroke: Rapid assessment and treatment for acute ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes, including administration of thrombolytics (for ischemic stroke) and emergency surgery for brain hemorrhages.
- Seizures: Immediate care for patients experiencing seizures, including anticonvulsant medications and assessment for underlying causes.
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): Stabilization and management of head injuries, including intracranial hemorrhage or concussions, with CT scans and monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP).
- Acute Respiratory Failure: Management of respiratory distress, hypoxia, and failure, including intubation, mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation (CPAP/BiPAP), and airway management.
- Asthma & COPD Exacerbations: Immediate treatment for severe asthma attacks, COPD exacerbations, and other breathing difficulties, including nebulized bronchodilators, steroids, and oxygen therapy.
- Pulmonary Embolism: Diagnosis and management of pulmonary embolism (PE) with anticoagulation therapy, thrombolytics, or surgical intervention if required.
- Acute Pediatric Care: Emergency care for children with conditions such as dehydration, high fever, seizures, respiratory distress, or injuries.
- Neonatal Emergencies: Special care for newborns in distress, including neonatal resuscitation, management of birth asphyxia, and support for premature babies.
- Poisoning & Overdose: Treatment of pediatric poisonings and drug overdoses, using appropriate antidotes, gastric lavage, and other life-saving measures.
- Obstetric Emergencies: Immediate care for complications during pregnancy, such as eclampsia, placenta previa, preterm labor, and post-partum hemorrhage.
- Gynecological Emergencies: Rapid evaluation and treatment for conditions like ectopic pregnancy, severe pelvic pain, or vaginal bleeding.
Poisoning and Toxicology
- Acute Poisoning: Emergency care for patients who have ingested toxic substances, including chemicals, medications, or illicit drugs. Treatment may include activated charcoal, antidotes, or gastric lavage.
- Drug Overdose: Management of overdoses with narcotics, sedatives, or other substances, using life-saving treatments like naloxone for opioid overdose and supportive care.
- Sepsis: Rapid recognition and treatment of sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection, including intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and vasopressors to support blood pressure.
- Infectious Outbreaks: Management of patients during epidemics or outbreaks of infectious diseases such as influenza, COVID-19, dengue, or viral infections.
- Meningitis & Encephalitis: Diagnosis and emergency treatment of central nervous system infections, including antibiotics, antivirals, and supportive care.
- Acute Abdominal Pain: Evaluation and treatment for acute conditions like appendicitis, gallstones, bowel obstruction, and perforated ulcers.
- Acute Gastrointestinal Bleeding: Emergency care for patients with upper or lower gastrointestinal bleeding, including endoscopic interventions or surgical consultation if necessary.
- Diabetic Emergencies: Treatment of patients in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hypoglycemic crisis, along with management of hyperglycemic emergencies.
- Mass Casualty Situations: The Emergency Department is equipped to manage mass casualty events such as accidents, natural disasters, or terrorist attacks. This involves triage, rapid stabilization, and coordination with other departments for treatment.
- Disaster Response Team: A well-coordinated disaster response team to handle emergencies involving large numbers of injured patients or complex multi-system trauma.
- Pharmacy: A 24/7 pharmacy service to ensure immediate access to life-saving medications and treatments.
