Department of Respiratory Medicine
Exploring the science of breath, where students learn to diagnose and treat respiratory disorders for better lung health
The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Siddaganga Medical College & Research Institute (SMCRI) Hospital is committed to providing comprehensive care for patients with a wide variety of respiratory conditions. With a strong emphasis on both diagnosis and management, the department is equipped to handle a range of respiratory disorders, from common conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to more complex diseases such as tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease, and lung cancer. The department also offers specialized services in pulmonary rehabilitation, critical care, and respiratory emergencies.

Services Provided
The Department of Respiratory Medicine at SMCRI offers a wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative services for patients with respiratory diseases. Our team is dedicated to delivering personalized care tailored to the specific needs of each patient. General Respiratory Care:
Chronic Respiratory Disease Management: Long-term care and management of chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis. Our team provides treatment plans that may include medication, lifestyle modifications, and education on self-management.
Acute Respiratory Infections: Diagnosis and treatment of conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, and influenza. Patients receive appropriate antibiotic therapy, supportive care, and close monitoring.
Cough Management: Comprehensive evaluation and management of persistent cough, which can be caused by conditions like asthma, reflux disease, or post-infectious inflammation.
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT):
ICU and Ventilator Management: The department provides specialized care for critically ill patients with respiratory failure. This includes mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation (CPAP, BiPAP), and the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Management of Acute Respiratory Failure: In conditions like sepsis, trauma, or exacerbations of chronic lung diseases, the team offers advanced life-support interventions and close monitoring in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Sleep Medicine:
The Department of Respiratory Medicine at SMCRI is deeply committed to education and training. We aim to develop highly skilled professionals capable of addressing the full spectrum of respiratory diseases. Our educational programs include:
The department is actively involved in research related to various aspects of pulmonary health, including:
The Department of Respiratory Medicine at SMCRI offers a wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative services for patients with respiratory diseases. Our team is dedicated to delivering personalized care tailored to the specific needs of each patient. General Respiratory Care:
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT):
- Spirometry: Basic test to assess lung function, especially useful in diagnosing conditions such as asthma, COPD, and other obstructive and restrictive lung diseases.
- Lung Volume Measurement: Advanced tests to assess lung capacity and functionality, important in the diagnosis of restrictive lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis.
- Diffusion Capacity Testing: Used to measure how effectively gases (such as oxygen) are exchanged in the lungs, particularly important in conditions like interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension.
- Diagnosis and Treatment: The department plays a critical role in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of tuberculosis (TB), in line with national TB control programs. We offer both inpatient and outpatient care for TB patients, including multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB).
- TB Screening: Active screening of high-risk populations (e.g., individuals in close contact with TB patients, healthcare workers, immunocompromised patients) to detect latent or active TB early.
- Asthma Management: Diagnosis and treatment of asthma using inhaled corticosteroids, bronchodilators, and leukotriene modifiers, along with patient education on inhaler techniques and trigger avoidance.
- Allergy Testing: Skin prick tests and blood tests to identify specific allergens that may be triggering asthma or other respiratory symptoms.
- Immunotherapy: Allergen-specific immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be recommended for patients with persistent allergic rhinitis and asthma.
- COPD Management: Comprehensive care for COPD patients, including the use of bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and oxygen therapy. We focus on improving the quality of life and preventing exacerbations.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation: A multidisciplinary approach to COPD management that includes exercise training, breathing techniques, nutrition, and psychological support to improve overall lung function and fitness.
- Diagnosis of ILD: In-depth diagnostic services, including high-resolution CT scans, bronchoscopy, and lung biopsy (if necessary), to identify various types of interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis.
- Management of Pulmonary Fibrosis: Personalized treatment plans, including medications like antifibrotic agents, as well as symptom management and palliative care for advanced stages.
- Early Detection: Screening and diagnosis of lung cancer, particularly for high-risk individuals (e.g., smokers). We use advanced imaging techniques, bronchoscopy, and biopsy procedures to diagnose cancer in its early stages.
- Multidisciplinary Approach: Collaboration with oncologists, radiologists, and surgeons to develop individualized treatment plans, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical interventions.
Sleep Medicine:
- Sleep Apnea Diagnosis and Treatment: Comprehensive evaluation and management of sleep-related breathing disorders like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Treatment options include CPAP therapy, lifestyle changes, and surgical interventions for severe cases.
- Polysomnography: A diagnostic sleep study conducted in our sleep lab to diagnose conditions such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and parasomnias.
- Diagnosis and Monitoring: Early detection and management of pulmonary hypertension through echocardiography, right heart catheterization, and advanced imaging. Treatment may include medications like vasodilators and oxygen therapy.
- Multidisciplinary Approach: Close collaboration with cardiologists and pulmonologists to manage complex cases of pulmonary hypertension.
- Smoking Cessation Programs: Structured programs to help patients quit smoking, including counseling, behavioral therapy, nicotine replacement therapy, and pharmacological support.
The Department of Respiratory Medicine at SMCRI is deeply committed to education and training. We aim to develop highly skilled professionals capable of addressing the full spectrum of respiratory diseases. Our educational programs include:
- Undergraduate Teaching: Medical students receive comprehensive training in respiratory medicine, covering topics such as lung diseases, diagnostics, pulmonary function tests, and treatment strategies.
- Postgraduate Residency Program: The department offers an MD in Respiratory Medicine, providing residents with in-depth clinical experience in diagnosing and managing complex respiratory conditions. The program includes both inpatient and outpatient exposure, as well as the opportunity to conduct research in the field of pulmonary medicine.
- Workshops and Continuing Medical Education (CME): Regular workshops, seminars, and CME programs are organized to update medical professionals on the latest developments in respiratory medicine.
The department is actively involved in research related to various aspects of pulmonary health, including:
- Asthma and COPD Research: Investigating new therapies and management strategies for asthma and COPD, with an emphasis on early intervention and personalized care.
- Lung Cancer Screening and Early Detection: Research into more effective screening methods for lung cancer, with the goal of detecting the disease at an earlier, more treatable stage.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Studying the effects of different rehabilitation interventions on COPD patients and exploring new approaches to improving quality of life.
- Tuberculosis Research: Ongoing studies to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis, especially in high-risk populations.
